The Influence
of the Sea
In Maine's
Music,
Poetry and
Painting

A Pathfinder
designed for
Curtis
Memorial Library
Brunswick,
Maine
The allure of the sea has influenced the
works of Maine’s artists – her musicians, her poets, and her painters—for
decades. Maine’s rocky coast has lured
settlers and visitors for as long as there have been ships to carry them
here. The sea holds a fascination that
inspires artistic expression. As a people, we have always needed the sea for
livelihood, but we have also celebrated the sea and the shore in song, poetry,
and on canvas.
This pathfinder examines that influence in each of
the disciplines. It is intended to
guide the reader to literature and information that is available in the Curtis
Memorial Library. (Call numbers are in
blue.)
